The cherubim are the highest in all the angelic hierarchy. Wherever they are encountered in Scripture, whether symbolically (Exodus 25:22) or actually (Ezekiel 10:19), they are guarding the way into the presence of God (Genesis 3:24). Satan, or Lucifer, was originally the "anointed cherub" (Ezekiel 28:14), but forfeited this position when pride led him to sin against God (Ezekiel 28:16,17).
