This statement is alleged to conflict with such passages as Genesis 12:8 which indicate that the early patriarchs did indeed know God by His name, JEHOVAH. The easiest resolution of the apparent contradiction is to regard the last clause as a rhetorical question (quite permissible in the Hebrew)--"by my name JEHOVAH was I not (also) known to them?"
