It is evident that David understood these promises of the Davidic Covenant to apply specifically to the people of Israel, as well as to himself and his promised son. That being so, it is significant that God said nothing to modify this understanding. It is true that eventually God will indeed give "my Son...the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession" (Psalm 2:7,8), but He also promised Israel that "David my servant shall be king over them...And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt;...and my servant David shall be their prince for ever" (Ezekiel 37:24,25). As Gabriel promised Mary: "And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever" (Luke 1:33).
