Election, as the work of the Triune God, included God the Son (John 13:18) and God the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 6:11). However, election is especially spoken of as the work of God the Father in Scripture.

The Bible speaks of the following six types of election:

Scripture Speaks Of An Election Of:

1. Jesus Christ

Behold My servant, whom I uphold: Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My Spirit upon Him: He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

- Isaiah 42:1

2. Angels

I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

- I Timothy 5:21

3. Officebearers

And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

- I Samuel 10:24

4. Nations

For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto Himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

- Deuteronomy 7:6

5. Church

I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto Me, Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten Thee.

Ask of Me, and I shall give Thee the heathen for Thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for Thy possession.

- Psalm 2:7-8

6. Individual persons

For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

- Romans 8:29


Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

- I Peter 1:2

According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love:

Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.

- Ephesians 1:4-5
