What rich love, deep comfort, and eternal security, are missed by those who deny the truth of God's election?

For as he rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

So shall My Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

- Isaiah 55:10-11

4. Election is the only true comfort for the saved. As sinful people, they know their sinful hearts, tendencies, and failures. But their salvation is secure outside themselves in God's eternal electing decree.

An older woman, lying upon her deathbed, listened to one of her lady visitors, who said, "You have done much for the church, cared for many families, and I never remember you having serious quarrels with anyone. I wish I could live the type of life that you have."

"My friend," replied the woman, "my church work was filled with self-pride, my caring for others blotted with self-reputation, and inwardly I have fought with many. My hope for eternity is built upon a much firmer foundation - Jesus Christ and God's eternal, unchanging, electing love."

Why was God's decree of election a rich comfort to this woman? Why is it the only true comfort for saved sinners?

Looking into our sinful hearts, or at our sinful world, the spiritual darkness and sinfulness would certainly discourage us. Salvation can appear to be very distant. It can seem so impossible!

But God's election shines forth as a beacon of light in the darkness. God will bless His Word to the salvation of many sinners. Despite all that we see around and within us, God's election shall stand. His Word shall not return unto Him void.

Is God's gracious election through Jesus Christ your hope; your only hope? Have you experientially learned something of your sinfulness and God's gracious electing love? Are you actively using God's means of grace and praying for His blessing upon their use? Is your deepest desire to exalt God and to humble yourself before Him? Is it your longing to assuredly rest in God's electing love as Paul, when he confessed: "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39)?

If so, then your God-given faith, hope, and love are fruits which evidence your eternal election by God through Jesus Christ.
