God's Providence

God is a God who upholds and governs His entire creation; One who performs that which He has decreed.

Imagine a person spending thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on various plans for constructing a large sailboat, but never actually building it; or, after completing the construction of a beautiful, complex, detailed boat, never caring for, or using, it for any purpose.

Would you not find such actions very senseless and foolish? God is not like such a person. God performs His plan. He maintains and governs His creation for a purpose.

God's continual work in the caring for, and governing of, His creation according to His plan and purpose is called God's divine providence. The Heidelberg Catechism beautifully answers the

  • Upholds - Supports; keeps alive; keeps functioning

  • Decreed - Willed; ordered; planned

Being predestinated according to the purpose of Hint who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will.

    - Ephesians 1:11b

The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

    - Proverbs 16:33

  • Divine Providence - God's caring for, upholding of, and ruling over all things
