Cooperation or concurrence refers to the almighty power of God by which He cooperates in every action of His creatures by giving them the will and strength they need in order to act. As human beings, we cannot so much as lift our arms without God cooperating to give us the necessary will, energy, and strength to do SO.

This is true, even when a person sins. God gives that person the ability to make a rational decision and perform an action. The person abuses the very abilities God is giving him, when he sins. The abililty to act is from God, but the deviation, the sinfulness of the action, is from man. Yet, no action is outside of God's government and control.

A teen-age boy was once walking to a theatre to see a film, which his conscience clearly told him was wrong. As he neared the place, the following questions entered his thoughts: "Who is giving you the power to walk right now? Who is giving you the ability to see?"

"God," he answered in his thoughts.

"Are you going to slap God in His face with the precious gifts of health and vision as He gives them to you? "

The young man stopped - he could not continue with his plans.

  • Cooperation (concurrence) - God's giving of will and strength to all living creatures which enables them to act

For in Him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also His offspring.

    - Acts 17:28a

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.

    - Philippians 2:13

For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

    - Romans 11:36

When speaking of divine cooperation, the deist disagrees with God's actions, and the pantheist with the creature's action. Why would this be, and how must we avoid both of these errors?
