Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.

And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

- Psalm 147:9

God's care over seemingly small or insignificant things is not a disgrace, but it promotes His glory. This is true because:

    1. As it was not a disgrace, but to His glory, to create small things, so God is also glorified in providing for them.

    2. By showing His constant care over smaller things, He reveals that He will not neglect caring for greater matters.

    3. He often uses smaller things to effect greater matters.

A sparrow once built her nest in an unused freight car which was waiting in line for repair.

When the car was put back into service, a nest full of young birds was found. Although the car traveled several hundred miles, the mother bird never left her young.

The faithfulness of the mother sparrow touched the sympathy of the trainmen, and the division superintendent granted their request to have the car removed from service until the little birds had left the nest.

The care of the superintendent for the family of sparrows was no disgrace to him. So God's care for all small things is no disgrace, but serves to clearly reveal His glory and greatness.

If a great railroad system can be changed by the order of a superintendent to protect a few helpless sparrows, how much more are we called to believe in the care and power of the Superintendent of the entire universe, the King of kings, and in His providence!

God's providence can be distinguished as being of three types:

    1. His general providence over creation

    2. His special providence over rational creatures (angels and men)

    3. His very special providence over His Church (His elect)
