His children. What Adam lost for his children, Jesus Christ gained for His. In Christ, His people are perfectly united to God again. God's grace in and through Jesus Christ is the hope, expectation, and salvation of all saved sinners. Is Jesus Christ your Savior? You need to know Him as your Savior for it to be well with you - both for time and eternity.

Adam stood in a two-fold relationship with God - as an individual human being, and as covenant head. As an individual, Adam was naturally obliged to love and obey God his Creator; for this, he was personally responsible. To this, however, was added his covenant relationship. As covenant head, or representative, he stood for the entire human race.

The agreeing parties in the Covenant of Works were God the Father, representing the Triune God; and Adam, representing the human race. This can be pictured as follows:

  • Covenant head - Representative; decision maker; leader of a group

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die

    - Genesis 2:16-17

One person's being placed in a position of representing others is fairly common. Think of the following examples:

A large number of people vote for a representative (or member of parliament) to represent them in their federal government.

A king's decision to go to war affects thousands of young men.

A father's decision to move to another city involves everyone in his family.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous.

    - Romans 5:12,19
