    But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

    - Genesis 2:17

    But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

    The following chart indicates the covenants of God which stem from His common grace, pertaining to nature and applying to man's temporal state; and those which arise from His saving grace, pertaining to salvation and applying to man's eternal state.

    The Covenants God Has Established With Man
    I. Temporary (Common Grace) Covenants
    (Concerning nature and man's relationship with his temporal state)

    A. The Covenant of Nature (or the Covenant of Common Grace or the Nonchian Covenant)

    And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,

    And I, behold, I will establish My covenant with you, and your seed after you;

    And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

    And I will establish My covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off anymore by the waters of a flood; neither shall there anymore be a flood to destroy the earth.

    And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations;

    I do set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the earth.

    - Genesis 9:8-13

    B. The Covenant of Day and Night

    Thus saith the LORD; if ye break My covenant of the day, and My covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;

    Thus saith the LORD; If My covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth.

    - Jeremiah 33:20,25

    II. Eternal (Saving Grace) Covenants
    (Concerning salvation and man's relationship with God and his eternal state)

    A. The Covenant of Works

    And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

    But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it.

    - Genesis 1: 16-17a

    For since by man came death, by Man came also the resurrection of the dead.

    For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

    - I Corinthians 15:21-22

    B. The Covenant of Grace

    But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

    - Hebrews 8:6

    For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

    Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of One the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

    - Romans 5:17-18

    As studied previously, God entered into a saving, covenant relationship with Adam and his descendants in Paradise called the "Covenant of Works." With heart, feeling, mind, and body, Adam was fully capable of keeping the covenant; indeed his deepest desire
