The Requirements of the Covenant of Grace

The Earning of the Covenant's Benefits by Christ
The Applying of the Covenant's Benefits by the Spirit of Christ
(Gracious benefits given to them through their Covenant Head)

1. That Christ would take upon Himself the human nature by being born of a woman into this sinful world, to represent His church.

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

- Galatians 4:4-5

Of Grace for Faith

1. To believe in Christ as the true Immanuel (the God-man); as God who took upon Himself the human nature to represent them.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

- John 3:36

2. That Christ would place Himself under God's law in order to fully pay the penalty for sin (through His passive obedience) and to completely merit eternal life (through His active obedience) for His church.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

- Matthew 5:17

Through Christ, graciously given the benefit...

2. To believe and trust, by faith, in the finished work of Christ, both in the payment for their sins and in the earning of their right to eternal life through His perfect work (their justification through Christ).

For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

- Romans 4:3-5

3. That Christ would apply His merits to His church; that through the applying power of the Holy Spirit, He would regenerate; convert; grant faith to, and work holiness in them; and preserve them in the dedication of their lives to God forever.

Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.

- John 16:13-14

Of Grace for Repentance and Obedience

3. To repent from sin and consecrate themselves to God, by the power of the Holy Spirit working within them, to wholeheartedly serve God in loving obedience (their sanctification through Christ).

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

- Hebrews 12:14
