In what ways are external church members separated from the world? In what additional ways are internal church members separated from the world? How are both of these distinctions important?

An outward relationship to God's covenant and church includes many rich blessings, of which the following are the principal four:

Four Benefits of an Outward Relationship to the Covenant

Benefit

Example Text

1. It includes a person as a member in God's church outwardly (the Church Visible).

This is My covenant, which ye shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

- Genesis 17:10

For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

- I Corinthians 7:14

2. It places a person under God's Word - His law and gospel, which He has promised to bless to the salvation of many. Therefore, to be placed under God's means of grace, under His sincere warnings and invitations, is a priceless blessing.

What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

- Romans 3:1-2

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

- Romans 10:17

3. It personally places God's name and mark of outward separation from the world and dedication to Him, upon a person. This personally confirms His truth and promise that He will forever be a gracious covenant-keeping God, who will be found by all those that need and ask for Him. The baptized may plead upon the truth of this promise sealed in their baptism.

This is My covenant, which ye shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

- Genesis 17:10

And when she was baptized, and her household.

- Acts 16:15a

4. It continually includes a person in the teachings, warnings, and prayers of the church.

And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

- 11 Chronicles 20:13

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brethren,

- Acts 1:14

Being placed in an outward relationship to God's covenant and church is a great blessing. God has made a gracious distinction in placing us there. By nature, we are not better than many others to whom God has not granted the precious benefits of an outward covenant relationship with Him.
