3. In an exceptional sense, regeneration testifies of any major renewal or re-creation. The Lord Jesus referred to the renewal of the heaven and earth, when He returns at the end of time, as a "regeneration." "Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (Matthew 19:28).

The most frequent use of the term regeneration refers to its meaning in the narrower sense - the implantation of new spiritual life in a spiritually dead sinner's heart. In our study, all references to "regeneration" refer to regeneration in its narrower sense, unless otherwise stated.

When speaking of regeneration, the Bible uses a variety of terms. The chart below lists several:

1. Born again

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

- John 3:3

6. Born of incorruptible seed by the Word of God

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.

- I Peter 1:23

2. Born of the Holy Spirit

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

- John 3:5

7. Renewed by the Holy Spirit

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

- Titus 3:5

3. Born of God

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

- John 1:13

8. Circumcised in heart

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

4. Quickened by God

And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.

9. Given a new heart

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

5. Quickened by Christ

For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will.

10. Made a new creature

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
