Christ has served as Prophet throughout both the Old and the New Testament administrations. He performed this office before, during, and after His ministry on earth - as shown in the following chart:

CHRIST SERVED AS PROPHET
Time Period Example Texts
a. Before His earthly ministry

Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

- I Peter 1:10-11

b. During His earthly ministry

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

- Matthew 4:23

c. After His earthly ministry

Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.

He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.

- John 16:13-14

Before Christ's ministry on earth, He taught by His Spirit through the means of dreams, visions, direct communication, angelic or divine appearances, casting of lots, and the use of the Urim and Thummim. He also gave the Holy Spirit and caused His Word to be infallibly written. The entire Old Testament was completed before Christ's ministry on earth.

Some people believe that a different way of salvation existed before Christ's earthly ministry than after. How does this belief contradict the scriptural truth of Christ as Prophet - "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever" (Heb. 13:8)? How does Hebrews 1:1-2 testify of this truth?

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds.

- Hebrews 1:1-2

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

- II Peter 1:21

  • Urim and Thummin - Objects carried in the breastplate of the Old Testament high priest, by which Israel could learn God's will regarding various important matters (Ex. 28:30; Num. 27:21)
  • Infallibly - Perfectly; without any error
