In Matthew 12:20, we read "A bruised reed shall He not break, and smoking flax shall He not quench."

What type and degree of faith is presented as "a bruised reed" and "smoking flax"? What lesson can we learn from this?

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His Name.

- John 20:31

That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

- John 3: 15-16

But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

- Hebrews 11:6

How do II Peter 1:10 and Hebrews 6:11-12 reveal that not all of God's regenerated children possess the assurance of faith?

Scripture speaks of growing in grace and in faith. The following chart provides some examples:

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen.

- II Peter 3:18

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

- Psalm 92:12

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.

- Ephesians 4:13-15

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.

- I Peter 2:2

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

- I Corinthians 3:1-2

But unto you that fear My Name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

- Malachi 4:2

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith towards God.

- Hebrews 6:1

The Bible testifies that all God's children are saved; for all have received the essence of faith -all are inseparably attached to Chris by faith; yet, all are not assured of their salvation. The ground of salvation does not lie in assurance, however; it lies in Christ. Those attached to Him by saving faith, regardless of its degree, will be saved. In short: to be saved, all must possess the essence of saving faith; all should strive for the assurance of faith.

Peter writes, "To them that have obtained like precious faith with us" (II Peter 1:1); and then instructs them in the same chapter "Brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure' (II Peter 1:10). Paul writes, "But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation" (Hebrews 6:9) and then states in the same chapter, "We desire that everyone of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises" (Hebrews 6:11-12).
