"I don't understand how a person can be a living child of God and not know this for sure," Sandra stated.

Let me assist you with an example, Sandra," her teacher responded. "Is a two-month-old baby a living human being?"

    "Of course," she answered.

"Does this young infant know this for sure? Can this baby tell you with full assurance that he is a living human being?

"No, it can't yet - not until it gets older."

"That's correct. Now the same is true spiritually. Infants in spiritual life also have not reached a spiritual maturity to assuredly testify that they are living children of God. But they are, just as that infant is a living human being. We know this from its crying, hunger, activity, and other signs of life. This is also true spiritually."

What are the life signs of God's spiritually born children?

All God's children are justified in the moment of their regeneration; however, not all possess the assurance of their personal justification in their consciences. All are encouraged and commanded to seek for personal assurance by faith.

While saving faith is the instrumental link between Christ and the needy sinner, it is also the appropriating organ of Christ's righteousness. Saving faith is both the channel through which God declares personal pardoning grace to the sinner, and the divinely planted and exercised organ which personally believes, trusts, and rests in God's justifying grace. This distinction refers to the difference between the imputing and the receiving of the justification explained previously.

Personal justification in the tribunal of one's conscience can be compared to a courtroom scene, as the following example illustrates.

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.

- I Peter 2:2

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.

- II Peter 1:10

And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

- Hebrews 6:11-12

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

- Romans 8:14-15

He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name.

- John 1:11-12

When viewing saving faith as an appropriating organ, why is it important to remain conscious of who implants and exercises it?
