True self-humiliation and God-exaltation are linked together. Why?

Of which of Jesus' parables does this story remind you?

Why is the richness of God's grace so amazing to one who has experienced his sinnership? Why are the knowledge of sin and deliverance tandem truths?

  • Tandem - Closely-paired; two items that are inseparably connected; one attached to, and closely following the other

Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near:

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

    - Isaiah 55:6-7

A young man became very disobedient, living in all types of sin. He nearly broke the hearts of his parents. Nothing helped, neither kindness nor punishment. His father did not know what to do. He feared that the continued strain would emotionally break his wife. Finally, in desperation, he told his son, "We have done everything in our power for you. I am at a loss. You are killing your mother. She cannot take the strain any longer. I must give you this choice - change your life and stay or you will have to leave."

The young man left. Months, then a year, went by in which the parents never heard from their son. But one day a letter arrived from a distant city. It read as follows:

      Dear Mother:

I am ashamed and sorry for my terrible conduct at home. I don't deserve that you would see me again. I do not know whether you and Father would be willing to forgive me or not. But I would like to return home. I will be on the 10 o'clock train next week Tuesday which passes by your house. If you can forgive me, hang a sheet on the clothesline. If I see the sheet, I will know that you have forgiven me and I am welcome to come back.

    Your Runaway Son

The young man's heart pounded as he approached his former home. Only around one more bend and he would be there. Would a sheet be out on the line - or not? As the train rounded the curve, not one sheet, but a clothesline full of sheets, a fence and bushes covered with every sheet in the house greeted his eyes!

What a welcome! What forgiving, pardoning love greeted him!

God's gracious love in forgiving sinners transcends all human levels of love. What an encouragement for all to "seek the Lord while He may be found, to call upon Him while He is near!" Are you?
