Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.

- Philippians 2:12-13

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

- Romans 8:13

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

- Romans 12:1-2

A church member visited his dying neighbor in the hospital. "Do you think about life after death - about eternity?" he asked him.

"Oh, yes," the man casually replied, "I soon hope to be singing with the angels. I've been very kind to my wife and good to my children."

The answer of his dying neighbor frightened the visitor. Silently he asked God for wisdom and for the right words. After a pause, he replied, "Neighbor, you have been kind to your family and to your neighbors also. But, do you know what those in heaven sing about?"

"No, I don't," the man answered.

"Let me read it to you from the Bible," the other replied. After locating the hospital room Bible, he read the heavenly song from Revelation 5:9-12, "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing."

He then explained who the Lamb was and that salvation is only possible for sinners through the perfect work of Jesus Christ.

His neighbor listened attentively and thanked him for coming to visit him. The following day, he passed away. The visiting church member never heard anything about the effects of his visit, but he was thankful that God had given him the opportunity to present the gospel way of salvation before his neighbor died.

Will the holiest of saints, those who were led furthest in sanctification on earth, praise God or themselves for their conversion and sanctification? Why? Why must we emphasize that the basis, the primary cause of sanctification, is God's supernatural work?

Passive sanctification produces active sanctification. While sanctification is worked, maintained, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit in the hearts of true Christians, yet the Holy Spirit works
