Upon receiving this message, Jackson left immediately and rode the eight miles to Lee's quarters against a bitter wind and snowstorm.

Much surprised at Jackson's prompt response, Lee asked why he had traveled through such a severe storm and not waited for a more convenient time to see him.

Jackson replied, "You wished to see me, Sir. My commander's slightest wish is a supreme command to me."

If God is King of a person's life, how will this fact be revealed? What is the true believer's "supreme command"?

Only regenerated persons can perform scriptural good works. An unregenerated person lacks the principle of saving faith; he misses the spirit of love that God's law requires; and he is void of concern for God's glory. Therefore the unregenerate cannot perform a good work according to biblical requirements.

Scriptural good works, however, must be distinguished from civil good works. Civil good works refer to outward words or actions of neighborly helpfulness or kindness which a person says or does for the "good" of another.

Man views these civil actions outwardly and .judges them to be good works. God, however, perceives that which man does not; He views each person inwardly. He sees the source, standard, and motive underlying each action. Outward appearance and inward motivation can be very different.

How can a person know what God's will is - what is pleasing and displeasing to Him?

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

- Jeremiah 13:23

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

- I Corinthians 13:1-3
