A PERSON'S GOOD WORKS
CANNOT EARN HIS SALVATION
Scriptural Reason:
Example Text:

1. All people are totally dependent upon God's workings of grace to enable them to perform good works; therefore, no person can claim credit for them.

a. The unregenerate need God's gracious regenerating and renewing grace

b. The regenerate need God's gracious sanctifying and strengthening grace

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

- Romans 3:10-12

But by the grace of God I am what I am: and His grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

- I Corinthians 15:10

2. All people owe their entire life to God; therefore, no one can merit anything by simply giving God that which is His due

Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

- Luke 17:9-10

3. Even the best works of God's children are imperfect before God; God cannot be satisfied with anything less than perfect obedience

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

- Isaiah 64:6

4. Christ has earned and paid for a full and complete salvation for His people; this would be unnecessary or repetitive if they also would earn all or part of it by their good works

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other Name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

- Acts 4:12

5. Salvation is a gift of God's free grace to His elect; this would be impossible if they earned all or part of it by their good works

And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

- Romans 11:6

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

- Genesis 6:5

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.

- Philippians 2:13

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

- Galatians 3:10-11

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

- James 3:2

I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

- Galatians 2:21

Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood.

- Romans 3:24-25a
