    cleave to all good. I am not what I hope to be - I shall Soon put off all sinful mortality and imperfection. Yet though I am not what I ought to be, nor what I wish to be, nor what I hope to be, I can truly say that I am not what I once was - a slave to sin and Satan. In this I can heartily join with the apostle and humbly acknowledge, 'By the grace of God, I am what I am.'"

    Do God's true children credit their own, or Christ's merits, for their salvation? Why?

While Scripture clearly teaches that a believer's sanctification and good works cannot earn his salvation, it also states that true believers must do good works. Saving faith must bring forth fruits; Spirit-worked sanctification must produce good works. If a person never brings forth good works, it is a clear sign that he is yet missing saving faith. A person's good works do not merit his salvation, but a person is not saved apart from good works. Good works do not open the gates of heaven, but the heavenly gates will not be open to those without them. The following scriptural references testify of this.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

- Luke 3:9

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

- Revelation 20:12

And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

- Revelation 22:12

THE NECESSITY OF GOOD WORKS IN THE LIVES OF BELIEVERS

Matthew 3:10

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

James 2:20-22,26

But wilt thou know, 0 vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Revelation 21:27

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Romans 2:6-11

Who will render to every man according to his deeds;

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile;

For there is no respect of persons with God.

Matthew 7:16-21

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Not everyone that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.

Jeremiah 17:10

I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
