THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT

The fifth commandment declares, "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee" (Exodus 20:12).

This commandment marks a transition from the first table of God's law to the second. The first table, containing Commandments One through Four, deals with our relationship with the Lord -loving God above all. The second table, containing Commandments Five through Ten, deals with our relationship with others loving our neighbor as ourselves. The first table speaks of love to God directly; the second, of displaying love for God through our interaction with others. As illustrated below, the first table refers to man's necessary vertical relationship; the second table, to his required horizontal relationships.



The two tables of God's law are inseparable. True love for God must flow out in love for others, as the Apostle John testifies: "If a

  • Transition - Change; movement from one state or place to another
  • Vertical - Up and down; upright
  • Horizontal - Level; across

    Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

    This is the first and great commandment.

    And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

    On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
