The curse of God resting upon those publicly hung upon a tree or cross was well-known from Scripture. To endure this full curse is unthinkable.

Jesus Christ willingly endured this painful, shameful, and accursed death for sinners. He died to save His people, who were haters of, and rebels against, God and Christ.

God's love in Jesus Christ is indescribable. Its depth is unfathomable. If one would give his life to save a close friend, we would admire his love. If one would be willing to endure death by crucifixion for a friend, we would be amazed at the depth of his love. But for one to endure this for enemies, rebels, and sinners - this is unimaginable!

Has this love ever melted your heart? The fear of God's justice toward a sinner may stop him, but the experiencing of God's love toward a sinner will break his heart.

Jesus died as a perfect Savior for sinners. He died between sinners - thieves and malefactors. He died with outstretched arms - to receive and bless needy sinners. He died elevated between heaven and earth - as Mediator between God and sinners.

In His death, Jesus satisfied the following requirements:

Requirement: Example Text:
1. God's Justice

Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

- 1 Peter 2:24

2. God's Truth

God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: bath He said, and shall He not do it? or bath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

- Numbers 23:19

3. God's Love

But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

- Romans 5:8

  • Malefactors - Evildoers; criminals

And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

    - Philippians 2:8

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

    - Romans 5:7-8

And He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

    - Isaiah 53:12b

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

    - Isaiah 53:5

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.

    - 1 Peter 3:18

And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin.

    - I John 3:5

Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

    - Titus 2:14
