To fully pay the price for His people's sin, Christ died a three- fold death. He did so in the following manner:

Type of Death How Christ Endured
Each Death Type
1. Corporal

Jesus died physically; His soul separated from His body and returned to God; His body was placed in the grave.

2. Spiritual

Christ endured the deathly spiritual pain of separation from God's favor and communion.

3. Eternal

Jesus bore the full wrath of God against sin and the total darkness of hellish agonies and separation from God's grace.

After enduring the full agonies of spiritual and eternal death, Jesus cried out, "It is finished. Father into Thy hands I commend My spirit." In so doing, He died corporally and fully paid the three-fold death-price for sin.

The English statement of Christ found in John 19:30, "It is finished," is translated from the Greek expression "tetelestai." This means, "It is finished, concluded, ended, or fulfilled."

This same Greek expression "tetelestai" has been found written across Roman bills of that time meaning "It is paid," signifying that the account is closed - "It is finished."

What double sense of joy for God's Church can be derived from the double use of the Greek expression translated "It is finished"?

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, He said, Father into Thy hands I commend My spirit: and having said thus. He gave up the ghost.

- Luke 23:46

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?

- Matthew 27:46

And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

- Luke 22:44

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

- Luke 23:44-45

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished: and He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost.

- John 19:30
