life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever" (I John 2:16-17).
Theater attendance and video film rental for entertainment purposes promote the same sinful transgressions of God's law as those detailed for television viewing. The degree of transgression is enlarged, however, due to less restrictions being placed upon films and videos than upon general television programming. Payment for theater entrance or video rental supports the professional film entertainment industry - one of the greatest moral-corrupting influences in our society.
The following example illustrates the danger of beginning to attend a theater. The same danger would be true for home video rentals.
Roger and Sally had been dating for nearly a year. One Friday night, they decided to attend a "good" movie being shown in a local theater. The film had a general rating no sex, nudity, swearing, or violence. They felt this movie was acceptable and went to see it.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
- Romans 12:2
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
- I Corinthians 10:31
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
- I Corinthians 7:1
And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
- Acts 24:16
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.
- Romans 13:14
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
- II Corinthians 10:5
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
- Ephesians 4:22-24
Satan generally tempts, and sin usually proceeds step by step. How should the knowledge of this truth promote caution and carefulness in our lives?
