Are most errors in doctrinal matters outright denials, or unbalanced teachings of the truths of Scripture? Why is scriptural balance very important?

What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

For He saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

For the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew My power in thee, and that My Name might be declared throughout all the earth.

-Romans 9:14-17

Lisa had just completed her first lesson in horseback riding. "It was difficult to keep my horse going straight," she explained. "I was constantly overreacting and pulling too strongly on the right or left rein. To keep your horse right on track is not easy!"

When studying and teaching from God's Word, a similar difficulty is experienced -pulling too strongly to one side or the other. To be strictly scriptural is not easy! Why is this true?

MEANS OF GRACE: WORD AND SACRAMENT

The means of grace are the instruments which God has ordained to be the ordinary channels of His grace. The Holy Spirit is the Author of saving faith; the means of grace are the instruments through which He operates.

The principal means of grace are:

    1. God's Word -the Bible (law and gospel)

    2. God's sacraments -Holy Baptism and the Lord's Supper
