Human sexuality and marriage are gifts and institutions of God. This truth is confirmed in the first chapters of Genesis, as shown in the chart below.

Principles Texts from
the Creational Chapters
1. God created us male and female

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.

- Genesis 1:27

2. God personally brought Eve to Adam to be his wife

And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made He a woman, and Adam to be his wife brought her unto the man.

- Genesis 2:22

3. God stated that these two shall be one flesh; living in a loving, unashamed openness with each other

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

- Genesis 2:24-25

4. God commanded them to be fruitful and to multiply

And God blessed them, and God said unto them Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth, and subdue it.

- Genesis 1:28a

The Bible clearly establishes in its opening chapters and reconfirms throughout both testaments that sexuality within marriage is not something that is wrong, dirty, or shameful, but rather it is a God-created and God-given gift. It is a precious blessing given by God before sin even entered this world.

In Paradise, God established three precious human institutions. After man's fall into sin, these principles of human life remain as precious gifts from God. However, each of the three blessings has been distorted and corrupted by sinful man. God's institutions, their respective desires, and corresponding corruptions are summarized in the chart on the following page.

Carefully study the verses quoted in this chart on human sexuality and marriage. How does:

  • Genesis 1:27 contradict the unisex ("look-alike, be-alike") movement?
  • Genesis 2:22 contradict those who view marriage as only a human institution?
  • Genesis 2:24-25 contradict those who promote homosexuality as a normal lifestyle and their living together as an acceptable "family" in society?
  • Genesis 1:28 contradict those who promote the use of birth control measures for all types of personal convenience reasons?

Explain how both of the following extreme beliefs are unscriptural and are to be avoided:

  • "Sex is everything!"
  • "Sex is nothing!"
