2. Inward examination of soul's experience -a divine right
A church right consists of the following two factors; the person
a. A confessing member of the church -A participant at the Lord's table must be of adult age; he must have the necessary maturity of discernment to properly examine himself. Public confession of faith must be made by mouth before public profession of faith is made by action -by sacrament participation.
b. A member in good standing -A participant of the Lord's Supper must not be under church discipline, i.e., under silent or public censure. Those publicly living in sin or teaching false doctrines are openly testifying that they are not walking in the way of the Lord as revealed in His Word.
Our Form for the Administration of the Lord's Supper testifies of one's outward self-examination in the box below:
SELF-EXAMINATION OF ONE'S CHURCH RIGHT
Therefore, we also, according to the command of Christ, and the Apostle Paul, admonish all those who are defiled with the following sins, to keep themselves from the table of the Lord, and declare to them that they have no part in the kingdom of Christ; such as all idolaters, all those who invoke deceased saints, angels, or other creatures; all those who worship images; all enchanters, diviners, charmers, and those who confide in such enchantments; all despisers of God, and of His Word, and of the holy sacraments; all blasphemers; all those who are given to raise discord, sects and mutiny in church or state; all perjured persons; all those who are disobedient to their parents and superiors; all murderers, contootious persons, and those who live in hatred and envy against their neighbors; all adulterers, whoremongers, drunkards, thieves, usurers, robbers, gamesters, covetous, and all who lead offensive lives.
All these, while they continue in such sins, shall abstain from this meat (which Christ hath ordained only for the faithful), lest their judgment and condemnation be made the heavier.
-Form for the Administration of the Lord's Supper
The elders, who are placed by God in this ruling office, must govern the administration of the Lord's Supper as far as the church right of all participants is concerned. The elders must know who are not confessing members in good standing in the congregation. All such are forbidden to participate as long as they continue in their sinful, offensive practices.
What is meant by the terms church discipline, silent censure, and public censure?
And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:
Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
-I Corinthians 5:2,6-8 I
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
-I Timothy 1:19-20
A man that is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject.
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
