God's eighth commandment requires us to care for the possessions of others as we would want others to care for our goods. It demands honesty in business - dealing with others as we want to be dealt with when buying and selling.

The following scriptural texts and example stories refer to proper attitudes toward others' possessions.

PROPER ATTITUDES TOWARD
THE PROPERTY OF OTHERS

If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.

- Exodus 23:4

And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

- I Samuel 24:5

Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother.

And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.

In like manner shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his raiment; and with all lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not hide thyself.

Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.

- Deuteronomy 22:1-4

But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.

- II Kings 6:5

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

- Acts 24:16

And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

- Mark 12:31

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself..

- Galatians 5:14

If ye fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well.

- James 2:8

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

- Matthew 7:12

What is the "golden rule" regarding how to view and care for the possessions of others?
